Tavari is a merman, and the main antagonist in 'Mermaid Tales'.
Biography[]
Sometime before the series takes place, Tavari lived in the Kingdom of Mariana, though he questioned the teachings of peace and isolation during his time there. After leaving the Kingdom to live beyond the barrier he developed the belief that the people of Mariana are idiotic and gullible, believing the ideals of the Kingdom to be brainwashing, and swore to destroy the barrier and either takeover or destroy Mariana once he got the chance.
Sometime later, he devolved something of a lustful obsession with a human woman named Lucinda, eventually kidnapping her by dragging her into the ocean while she was walking with her lover, Ivan, along the dock. He then attempted to transform her into a mermaid so they 'could finally be together'. This failed, and instead put her into a permanent slumber and tainted the magic of her human hair, making it unable to be used for potions. Tavari then placed Lucinda in a glass coffin to keep her safe, and vowed he would find a way to wake her and turn her into a mermaid, no matter what it may cost.
Tavari was first introduced in "Merman?..." when he "rescues" Aphmau from the sea bunnies. He manipulates Aphmau into making a deal with him: if he should remove her 'ugly' scales, he wants her to bring him a valuable resource: human hair. When she returns, she doesn't have nearly enough for his plans, so he summons the crab Zane (who also made a deal with him,) to help her.
He shows Aphmau that she can distract Zane with shiny things if he gets out of hand, and that he's going to help her in her search for more human hair. He gives her a potion to make her human, and she rushes to the surface when she's told humans can't breathe underwater. Now alone in his grotto, Tavari visits Lucinda and promises to keep her safe when they're finally together.
Zane returns in "I'll Keep You Safe" to tell him that Aphmau not only survived the transformation (which shocks him), but that she's met a human. He snaps at Zane to go back to the surface and help her, giving him a potion to pass along so that she can speak with the human. He's ecstatic- Aphmau being able to transform into a human means he should be able to perform the opposite successfully with enough human hair.
When Katelyn and Teony meet Zane, he brings them to Tavari's grotto with a bit more human hair. It's still not enough, however, upon noticing that Katelyn is a princess, Tavari becomes interested in the duo. He gives Zane three potions to pass along to Aphmau- two to extend her transformation and human speech and one to kill her should she not produce results. First, he visits Lucinda again, finding out that he's able to make a potion to wake her, at the very least. And when he returns, he manipulates Katelyn and Teony into trusting him.
He tells Katelyn he requires use of her sea crystal to charge the potions made for removing their scales. She hesitantly accepts, but he insists only she can hold the crystal. She does so, but when her and Teony drink them he tells them to swim to the surface because they'll need to, revealing that they were truly potions to turn them into humans. Katelyn drops her sea crystal and Tavari takes it for himself.
So close to his goal after having finished Lucinda's potion, instead of heading straight to Mariana to break the barrier, he becomes too power-hungry and seeks to take an entire human to make potions from. Armed with his golden dagger, he leaps from the ocean and drags Aaron under, holding him against a rock at the bottom to drown him. He scolds Aphmau for not having done this from the start. Aphmau tells him to let Aaron go since he's nice. Tavari mocks her for thinking everything (including Aaron) is nice and she has no opinions because that's just how Mariana brainwashes all of their mermaids. She claims that she does have an opinion, that being that Tavari's a jerk. He sarcastically claims to be scared and notices Aaron beginning to die.
Aphmau tackles him and steals his dagger, swimming away- but he's much faster than her and takes it back, swinging wildly at her. He manages to slice her several times until she dazes him by hitting him over the head with a rock. She flees, but he chases her into a small cave where he taunts her and tells her to come out so he could make her bleed more. When she refuses, he mockingly asks her if she's afraid of her own blood. Tavari then hears an unknown noise, turning to find Titanus staring at him. Paralyzed in fear, he could do nothing as the shark advanced on him. His death isn't seen, but his agonized screams, the crunching of bones, and the tearing of flesh is heard.
Unfortunately, however, his death was not in vain, for Lucinda was not only turned into a mermaid, but also became his successor, intending to takeover both land and sea.
Appearance[]
Tavari is a pale merman with short, messy nearly-black green hair, and olive green eyes. His tail fin is a dark, denim shade of blue. He has two ear fins on the sides of his head that are the same color as his tail fin. He wears two matching faded blue bracelets around both of his wrists.
Personality[]
Tavari was a cunning, manipulative, and sadistic merman. Who had no qualms about lying to and harming others archive his own selfish goals.
He was a fairly intelligent merman, being one of the few citizens of Mariana to question the teachings of King Eric, and being intensely skilled in both potion making and witchcraft. Despite this, he was an arrogant individual who often underestimated the people around him and attempted to prey on their feelings or perceived naivety.
Tavari also seemed to showcase obsessive tendencies, stalking and eventually kidnapping a human woman named Lucinda. Claiming to be in love with her. After abducting her from the surface, He attempted to turn her into a mermaid, likely against her will, and when the spell failed, incased her in a glass coffin to 'keep her safe'. His behavior towards her was intensely obsessive and controlling, as he didn't care at all about her own will or agency, only his own twisted 'love' for her and his desire to use their combined Magiks to further his own malicious goals.
He enjoyed both seeing and causing harm to others, taking pleasure in their mental and physical pain. He showed little sympathy for Aphmaus distress and sadness at being lost so far from home, and laughing at the pain the potions he gave her, Katelyn, and Teony caused. He as well seemed to take pleasure in the distress he caused Ivan, Lucindas lover, after abducting her by dragging her into the ocean in front of him.
Tavari is also quite impatient, almost having Aphmau killed when she fails to produce the results he wants in time. Even when he gets what he wants, he will continue to try for more, which eventually lead to his demise.

Trivia[]
- Unlike other merfolk, Tavari's ears are fins. This may indicate that at least his head had contact with the surface.
- He also did not obtain any scales when he leapt out of the water to snatch Aaron, suggesting that he has indeed made full contact with the surface once, and was able to cure himself of his scales like Aphmau and the others later on, but was unable to turn his ears back to normal.
- Tavari shares many similarities with Ursula from The Little Mermaid:
- They both make deals with other people using magic, only to backstab them for their own benefit.
- They are both able to make potions, including ones that can turn mermaids into humans.
- They both were former residents of the kingdoms the main protagonist came from, those being Mariana and Atlantica. Although Tavari left willingly, while Ursula was exiled.
- They both have sentient sea creatures as minions. While Tavari has Zane, Ursula has Flotsam and Jetsam.
- They both trick royalty and steal their belongings. Tavari stole Katelyn's sea crystal while Ursula stole King Triton's crown and trident.
- They are both the main antagonists of their respective stories and receive what they want only to die moments later.
- They both make a deal with the main protagonist, as well as turn them into a human. They also later try to kill the protagonist only to get killed by someone or something else.
- The origin of the name Tavari is very likely an Aramaic variant of the name Tavaris.
- Tavaris means 'misfortune'.
